Google Play Loses to Epic - more free games?

🎮 Google loses appeal in Epic Games case, forcing them to open up the Play Store

Google and Epic Games have been fighting in court for years at this point, but Google just took a massive hit that will force it to truly open up its Play store.

As our Discord community member “rabesandratan” summarized, starting in 8-15 months from now, Google:

  • Will be required to allow distribution of rival third-party app stores within the Play Store,

  • Must grant those rival stores access to the full Google Play Store app catalog, unless developers choose to opt out individually.

So, what does this mean for us mobile gamers?

Apart from the fact that you’ll be able to download third-party stores such as the Epic Games Store directly from Google Play, I predict this ruling means we’ll all be getting a ton of free premium games (yay!).

All these new third-party stores will be competing for our attention, and I think many will mimic Epic Games by giving away free games on a weekly or monthly basis - if they can afford it.

So no matter how this plays out, I believe it’ll be a win for you and me :)
